Twelve years ago, the Times was one of the first news organizations to give readers the ability to post comments on news stories on its website.
In the spirit of online chat rooms, readers were permitted to post comment anonymously. The person who made the comment (they become the publisher of the comment, not the Times) didn’t have to use his or her real name.
